Le grand quotidien américain New York Times s'est invité mercredi dans le débat sur l'interdiction du voile intégral en France, accusant le gouvernement français d'"attiser la haine" dans un éditorial intitulé "Les talibans applaudiraient".
Il est facile de voir que les droits des femmes sont violés quand un gouvernement leur ordonne de dissimuler leur corps sous un voile entièrement couvrant", écrit le quotidien new-yorkais dans un éditorial au ton très offensif. "Il devrait être aussi facile de voir la violation quand une commission parlementaire française recommande [...] l'interdiction des services publics, dont les écoles, les hôpitaux et les transports publics, aux femmes qui portent ces voiles", poursuit le texte.
UN DÉBAT NATIONAL "IDIOT"
La mission parlementaire "pluraliste" sur le port du voile intégral a préconisé mardi une loi l'interdisant dans les services publics, transports compris. "Au lieu de condamner les recommandations [de la commission], le président Nicolas Sarkozy semble déterminé à surenchérir", affirme le New York Times, évoquant la position du chef de file des députés UMP Jean-François Copé, qui exige que le voile intégral soit prohibé dans tout l'espace public. Si une telle loi était adoptée, "les talibans seraient contents" mais "le reste du monde devrait manifester sa répugnance", poursuit le texte, ajoutant : "Malheureusement, les responsables politiques français semblent vouloir fermer les yeux devant les violations des libertés individuelles."
Dans la perspective des régionales en mars, "il est difficile de créer de l'emploi et facile d'attiser les préjugés antimusulmans", continue l'éditorial, ajoutant que pour récupérer des voix à l'extrême droite, "le gouvernement de centre-droit de M. Sarkozy a passé des mois à promouvoir un 'débat national' parfois idiot, parfois menaçant sur l'identité française". "Aucun gain politique ne peut justifier d'attiser la haine", conclut-il.
